Modern life has become so hectic that humans need more time for proper sleep. We need to understand that having adequate sleep is vital for our wealth. Proper eight-hour sleep is essential for good health, mood, and brain performance.

Compromising your sleep can lead to many health disorders and diseases like dementia, stroke, heart disease and obesity.

Just spending hours in bed is not enough to have a good sleep. Proper sleep can be measured by three things – sleep quality, sleep quantity, and refreshing and interrupted sleep.

  • Sleep truth and myths

The amount of sleep you need changes with your age. According to experts, teenage children need around eight to ten hours of sleep, whereas school-going children need to sleep a minimum of nine hours. Adults should sleep for at least seven hours every night.

There are plenty of myths regarding sleep. You do not need to sleep less while ageing. That is not the truth. Older adults need a similar quantity of sleep. The quality of sleep mainly reduces with age. Older adults prefer to take medication more often, which interferes with their sleeping patterns.

Another myth regarding sleep is that you can sleep longer on weekends. But that is not the case in actuality. You must supplement your weekday sleep during the weekends. You cannot sleep longer to match the hours you lack on weekdays.

Research has shown that lack of sleep can lead to weight gain because the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels reduces. The concept of weekend sleeping to catch up only sometimes works.

On the flip side, it is not that the more you sleep, the better it is for you. Even if adults sleep over nine hours, they will not feel refreshed. It indicates underlying medical problems.

  • Sleeping disorders

Some people suffer from sleeping disorders that prevent them from getting good quality sleep.

Insomnia can be said to be one of the common sleep disorders. When you repeatedly face difficulty in sleeping, it’s termed insomnia. You cannot stay asleep despite having a proper sleeping environment and enough time. You feel unrested and tired during the day due to lack of sleep.

Sometimes, this disorder can stay for a short term, where individuals struggle to have proper sleep for a month or week. As we have seen during the pandemic, people have difficulty getting adequate sleep every day for several reasons.

Long-term insomnia can last up to three months or even longer. Sleep strips from Lulltape can enhance your sleep quality.

There is another common sleeping disorder known as sleep apnea. In this case, the upper airway gets blocked while sleeping. It reduces the airflow and causes people to wake up in the middle of their sleep. This can be a dangerous situation, and if left untreated, can lead to other health issues.

Summing it up:

If you regularly have sleeping issues, it’s better to consult with your doctor. Do not delay visiting a doctor. A good night’s sleep can work wonders for your body. Why don’t you keep a sleep diary to track your daily sleep?
