Back pain is something that can happen to anybody, regardless of your age. Unfortunately, it can be incredibly debilitating, to the point of leaving you completely motionless in bed. Whether your back pain was caused by a previous injury or poor posture, the fact still remains that it can significantly impact your day-to-day life.

The good news is that there are ways to improve your condition and not only reduce the pain but hopefully eliminate it entirely. To help you, here are some effective strategies to alleviate your discomfort, and ultimately heal.

Rest

Rest is the most important thing you can do for a sore back. Remember, rest means rest. Hire professionals to do your unloading, don’t engage in extremely physical activities more intense than walking, and above all, make sure that you get enough sleep.

If you don’t have a high-quality mattress, then now is the time to consider getting one. Your mattress plays an important role in the quality of sleep that you get, so it’s worth putting a little money into. The more you rest, the more time you’ll give your body to recover, so consider taking at least one day off of work if you can to lie down and let your back restore itself.

Alternate Ice and Heat

Using ice and heat therapy can be one of the best ways to reduce inflammation and soothe your aching muscles. Initially, apply an ice pack for about 20 minutes to reduce the swelling and inflammation. After a few days, you can use a heating pad to loosen up the muscles and tissues and stimulate blood flow. You can alternate between the ice and heat until you feel yourself more flexible and in much less pain.

 Move

Although rest is important, movement is also important. Your muscles need to strengthen themselves again, so it’s critical that you move.  Gentle exercises like yoga, or even going for a light walk can make a world of difference in strengthening your back and improving your overall flexibility.

You should also stretch whenever possible. Engaging in light stretching will help target the right areas and ultimately encourage healing. Remember to start lightly. If you go too quickly too soon, you could seriously hurt yourself and exacerbate your injury.

Sit Up Straight

When trying to navigate a sore back, it helps to maintain the right posture, as poor posture will inhibit healing. If sitting up straight is consistently a challenge for you, then you might want to consider wearing a back brace. A back brace will help you sit up straight even when you’re not necessarily trying. You should also consider investing in an ergonomic chair that will force you to keep your back straight by encouraging the natural curve of your spine.
