As we get older, we undergo all sorts of changes, and many of them are perfectly positive!  After all, we’re wiser, and have so much more experience under our belt. However, along with all of the positives of getting wiser also come certain challenges.

Perhaps the most challenging is the health aspect. Our bodies aren’t what they once were in our younger years, and as such, as we enter our golden years. we can find ourselves susceptible to injury and illness.

Preventing injuries is crucial if you hope to maintain your independence and stay happy. Recognizing the most common injuries can help you steer clear of them.  To help you, here are some of the most common senior injuries.

Falls

As you get older, you may not be as coordinated as you once were. As such, many seniors find themselves more susceptible to slips and falls. Falls are one of the leading causes of injuries among seniors, and unfortunately can result in serious complications.

Fractures and hips for example can become so serious that they can render someone entirely immobile. That’s why it’s so important for seniors to look out for even the most seemingly innocent of conditions. Even the edge of a rug can send us directly to the emergency room, so always be aware of your surroundings.

Sprains and Strains

Seniors are no strangers to strains and sprains, especially in their ankles, knees and wrists. Often these can occur from something as simple as a sudden movement or twisting the wrong way. Unfortunately, these can lead to serious discomfort and the inability to get around or pick things up. Be careful when lifting things, and be extra mindful of the way you move your body. A little extra mindfulness can make a world of difference in preventing sprains and strains.

Burns

Burn injuries are unfortunately very common in the senior age bracket because seniors tend to have a slower reflex when they touch something hot. Their brains may not realize right away that they’re touching something that’s burning their skin, and as such they are unable to remove themselves from the burn fast enough to avoid injury.

Burns don’t only come from flame, either. They can also come from the sun. Wear proper protective clothing and sunblock, and be mindful when you’re cooking. This also includes using space heaters and fireplaces, as you can sustain serious injury.

Head Injuries

Head injuries are prevalent in the senior community, and are often a result of falls. These can be especially dangerous for seniors because something as small as a minor bump can lead to a concussion or a traumatic brain injury. Wear non-slip shoes whenever possible, and if necessary, always use your assistive devices like a walker or your cane.
