Autotrophic and heterotrophic forms of nutrition are the two most prevalent types. Autotrophs are the majority of plants that produce their food. Animals cannot produce their food. Hence, they are classified as heterotrophs because they rely on plants for sustenance. In essence, plant nutrition is autotrophic, whereas animal nutrition is heterotrophic. 1.   Animals’ Heterotrophic Nutrition

Heterotrophic nutrition indicates that an organism obtains its food and nutrition from other organisms. Several animals cannot produce their nourishment; these organisms are known as heterotrophs. This type of animal diet is known as heterotrophic.

Example: Fungi, humans, and other animals depend on plants for food and sustenance, either directly or indirectly. Therefore, the mode of animal nutrition is known as heterotrophic nutrition. Remember, various heterotrophs depend on the type of food required by their environment, surroundings, and adaptations.

  • Herbivores are heterotrophs that consume only plants, grasses, shrubs, and saplings. Examples include cow, goat, buffalo, and deer.
  • Carnivores are heterotrophic organisms that devour other animals. Example: Lion, Tiger, Leopard, etc.

2.   Parasitic Mode of Nutrition

It is a form of heterotrophic mode of animal nutrition, similar to that of certain plants. Here, an organism lives on or inside another animal and derives its food and sustenance from the host. A parasite is an organism that lives on or within the body and derives nutrition from other organisms.

The other organism whose body is utilized by the parasite is referred to as the host. Parasites include bedbugs, lice, and tapeworms. Besides that, parasites are categorized according to their mode of nourishment in animals and plants. Ectoparasites and endoparasites are the two forms of parasites.

  • Ectoparasites are parasites that obtain nourishment from their hosts from the outside without inhabiting their bodies. Ticks and lice are both common pests.

3.   Saprotrophic Nutrition

Sapro means rotten. There are species whose food source is rotting and decomposing organic stuff. These creatures consume decomposing wood from dying or decayed trees, rotten leaves, dead animals, rotten bread, etc. These organisms are known as saprophytes.

Fungi and other types of bacteria are saprophytes.

Outside of their bodies, such saprophytes break down the complex organic matter of dead and decaying organic matter into simpler components. Saprophytes subsequently take the simpler compounds.

There are numerous types of animal nutrition, but heterotrophic nutrition is one of them. In this nutrition style, organisms receive sustenance from dead and decaying substances, such as the organic remains of dead plants and animals.

The organisms that obtain food in a saprophytic manner are referred to as saprophytes. Example: Fungi, certain protists, bacteria, etc.

4.   Holozoic Nutrition

A holozoic diet is one in which creatures consume solid food. The food may be derived from plants or animals. In this process, an organism ingests complex organic food material into its body, digests it, and then absorbs the digested food into its cells. Through the process of egestion, organisms eliminate undigested food from their bodies.

People, cats, dogs, bears, giraffes, fog, and fish, among others, share a holozoic mode of sustenance.

Based on their dietary preferences, animals are worth categorizing into three groups. They include herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.

  • Herbivores

Herbivores are animals that solely consume plants, such as grass, leaves, fruits, and bark. Herbivorous animals include cows, goats, sheep, horses, camels, and deer.

  • Carnivores

Carnivores are creatures that consume solely other animals. They consume no plants. The lion, the tiger, the frog, the vulture, the wolf, and the lizard are examples of carnivorous creatures. Carnivores are carnivorous.

  • Omnivores

Omnivores are creatures that consume both plant matter and the meat of other animals. The dog, the crow, the sparrow, the bear, and the ant are omnivorous creatures.

It is holozoic nutrition if we discuss the type of nourishment humans receive. Humans consume or ingest food, which is then digested to meet nutritional needs; the digested food is absorbed and assimilated, and waste is expelled. The term for this sort of diet is holozoic nutrition.
