The South African Bunny Chow Recipe

Talk about famous fast foods in South Africa, this Durban delicacy basks in all the spotlight. Bunny unlike burgers, pizza, chicken and chips is a trademark native inspired delicacy and has its roots in Durban.

The bunny chow is made of a hollowed piece of bread with a homemade feeling.

Ingredients

  • Two tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1kglambpieces
  • 2 tablespoons of  crushed garlic and ginger
  • Half a teaspoon of turmeric
  • 2 large cinnamon sticks
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 5 green cardamoms
  • 5 cloves
  • A sprig of curry leaves
  • Some crushed green chilies
  • 1 finely diced onion
  • A tablespoon of choice vinegar
  • Chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons of dhania-jeeru powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 blended tomatoes
  • 4 medium-sized potatoes
  • Some chopped fresh coriander

Preparation time is about 30 minutes and it will take you about an hour and 45 minutes to cook your Bunny Chow.

Cooking Instructions

Step 1: Getting the Spices right!

Let’s begin! Place your pot on low heat. Then, add some oil into the pot and place on medium heat. Wait for about a minute, then add your diced onions. Let it fry for some minutes before you add your cloves, bay leaves, cinnamon and fennels to the mix, then stir. When you’re done, add some curry leaves, onions and all the other spices. That sizzling sound they’ll come to make is everything. Watch out for that.

By now, your onions, curry leaves, gingers and chili must have found their way to the mix. Add the garam masala, the sugar and the vinegar and mix. Whatever you’ll add, it’s all about getting the spices right.

Step 2: Adding Your Meat

Add your meat into the pot and stir, then add some salt to taste. Now stir again till the meat is completely coated with masala. Add some water, and don’t stop stirring. Drop the heat and let it cook for about 40-45 minutes until the meat gets tender.
